Our nominated solution, Compostable Freshness Packaging, combines compostable PLA packaging with freshness-preserving technologies developed for blueberries, grapes, kiwifruit and other fresh produce applications.
This nomination recognises the direction our team has been pursuing with growers, packers and exporters: reducing the environmental impact of packaging while continuing to protect fresh produce through refrigerated storage, transportation and retail.

What We Set Out to Improve
We developed Compostable Freshness Packaging in response to a practical challenge raised by fresh produce customers.
Growers and exporters looking to replace conventional plastic packaging still need the new pack to protect fruit, control moisture, withstand stacking and transportation, and maintain an attractive retail presentation.
These requirements are particularly important for berries and other high-value produce. Blueberries can lose weight and firmness during refrigerated storage. Excess humidity can increase condensation, while insufficient moisture control can accelerate dehydration. Ventilation, internal atmosphere and packaging structure all influence the condition of the fruit after packing.
Our project brings these factors together in one packaging-development process.
Depending on the produce and supply chain, the packaging system can combine PLA clamshells or punnets with ventilation design, freshness-preserving films, modified-atmosphere packaging technology, labels and other supporting components.
Customers sourcing berry packaging can also explore our blueberry packaging solutions, where containers, freshness films, labels and other components can be matched within one fresh produce packaging project.
For rigid compostable formats, our PLA fruit clamshells are available for blueberries, grapes, berries and other fresh produce applications.
Freshness Performance We Can Measure
Freshness performance is evaluated through packaging and cold-chain testing under defined conditions.
In our blueberry test, fruit kept under cold-chain conditions without protective freshness packaging recorded a total weight loss of 8.43% and a defect rate of 13.69%.
With YiTo Pack's modified-atmosphere freshness packaging system, total weight loss was reduced to 0.92%, while the defect rate fell to 2.87%.
The same test recorded a maximum freshness period of up to 52 days under the tested refrigerated conditions.
These figures are important to our customers because weight loss and defects affect more than appearance. They influence fruit firmness, saleable weight, rejection rates and the amount of produce that can ultimately reach the market in acceptable condition.
Results will vary according to fruit variety, harvest condition, initial quality, storage temperature, transport environment and packaging specification. For that reason, we use test data as a starting point for packaging development rather than treating one result as a guarantee for every application.
Tested Around Real Cold-Chain Conditions
Freshness packaging also has to remain practical during handling and distribution.
In separate PLA blueberry packaging trials, our punnets were evaluated after 72 hours of simulated refrigerated transport at approximately 0–4°C and 85% humidity, followed by 7 days of retail display.
The PLA packaging maintained its structure under the test conditions, with no obvious deformation or fogging observed.
For export applications, compostability must be evaluated alongside transport stability, ventilation, fruit protection and retail presentation. A suitable pack must maintain its structure and performance throughout refrigerated transportation until the fruit reaches the destination market.
At the start of each fresh produce packaging project, we review the fruit type, pack weight, current container, transport time, storage temperature, humidity, destination market and retail format before recommending the final structure.
A 250 g blueberry clamshell and a 250 g cherry clamshell may look similar on a specification sheet, but the required ventilation layout, moisture management, and protection can be different.
